The Philosophy of Mount Carmel Youth Ranch is based on a commitment to personal growth through change, honesty, trust, experiencing the beauty of Gods creation in nature. Through our “paternal teaching” and “Reality Therapy” approach the young mans mind and heart are renewed and unfolded as God created him. We employ this philosophy in all of our day to day activities in this program. We are a family- a group of people involved in the total sharing of our lives. We know that change happens as a result of meaningful sharing and honest relationships. We also know that growth in the areas of honesty, trust, integrity, improved relationships, responsibility and stress management will reduce your child’s dependence on unmanageable behavior, thus increasing your child's ability to find joy and fulfillment in his life.

December 5th. Hello everyone! I am thrilled to be able to post comments about the happenings at Mount Carmel here in beautiful Wyoming. A chinook wind has blown through, melting the snow in the last couple of days. The weather has been fairly warm for December at around 45 degrees. The winter feeding program is well underway and our new corrals are working well with a clean safe environment for the cattle. Calving season will soon be upon us and last years crop of calves are almost ready to go to their new homes. Our truck driving classes have started and several boys are learning about Wyoming traffic laws. With the warmer weather we are able to catch up on tractor maintenance and getting ready for the harsher part of winter. Well this is just a general idea of what is going on at the ranch. I will post more tomorrow!

Happy Thursday everyone! Today the boys woke up to snow! It is mild 36degrees and has been snowing all day. It is very beautiful and calming. For Powell weather you can follow this link: http://weather.home.bresnan.net/
This time of year we have to start thinking about the harsh winter conditions ahead that affect calving, feeding, construction projects, and everyday plain living on a cattle ranch. The boys are also engaged in the dog program. We have Border Collies which they take care of. We also have a new litter of puppies and the boys are already anxious about playing with them in the next 4 weeks. If you want a Border Collie puppy, give us a call. We will be selling this litter soon. We also have 4 other young dogs ready to follow cows, herd sheep, train for agility or to just be a great member of the family (they also have their shots and worming). Well that's all for today, we will see what tomorrow will bring!

Happy Friday everyone!
Well today at MTC there was a lot of learning going on. The boys had a Saint Jude Thadeus Program class this morning taught by Ms. Susie and Ms. Robin and Staff got together in a meeting and gave out boys grades for the week. This evening the boys went to Mass to celebrate Immaculate Conception which signifies the beginning of the Christmas season. The boys and staff will also be putting up Christmas decorations and the Christmas tree this weekend as well. We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Hello everyone. We hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. This last weekend the boys assisted in loading hay bales for our horses. We are now hand feeding this hay and making daily checks on each horse. It will be time for some boys to learn how to pull horse shoes and trim a horse’s foot. Our horse herd is taking a well earned break from the warmer season where they packed boys around herding cattle and other ranch chores that required an equine partner. Some of the horses are rode more than others. For some reason certain horses are liked more. It's interesting to see how the relationship between these boys and horses develop. The horse is a principle tool that is used, not only for ranch work, but as a healing agent who is a quiet partner that understands the misunderstood.

Hello all! Sorry no blog yesterday. As always it is busy busy busy at the Ranch. Today I want to share a paragraph from a Western Horseman magazine that I have changed a little bit but really suits MTC. (Dec 2007 edition)
"Frigid weather conditions and short daylight hours slow operations on may ranches during the winter months, especially in colder climates. It is an opportunity for the horses to rest up and be ready for a busy spring, when calving and branding seasons begin. A slower pace is evident in the winter months. Cowboys might spend their time feeding cattle, starting colts or mending fences. A lot of seasoned horse ranches get a well-deserved break and won't pack a bit again until the cows start calving and branding season begins".

Winter Weather

THEODORE ROOSEVELT

When the days have dwindled to their shortest, and the nights seem never ending, then all the great northern plains are changed into an abode of iron desolation. Sometimes furious gales blowout of the north, driving before them the clouds of blinding snow-dust, wrapping the mantle of death round every unsheltered being that faces their unshackled
anger. They roar in a thunderous bass as they sweep across the prairie or whirl through the naked canons; they shiver the great brittle cottonwoods, and beneath their rough touch the icy limbs of the pines that cluster in the gorges sing like the chords of AEolian harp. Again, in the coldest midwinter weather, not a breath of wind may stir; and then the still, merciless, terrible cold that broods over the earth like the shadow of silent death seems
even more dreadful in its gloomy rigor than is the lawless madness of the storms. All the land is like granite; the great rivers stand still in their beds, as if turned to frosted steel. In the long nights there is no sound to break the lifeless silence. Under the ceaseless, shifting play of the Northern Lights, or lighted only by the wintry brilliance of the stars,
the snow-clad plains stretch out into dead and endless wastes of glimmering white.
Then the great fire-place of the ranch house is choked with blazing logs, and at night we have to sleep under so many blankets that the weight is fairly oppressive. Outside, the shaggy ponies huddle together in the corral, while long icicles hang from their lips, and the hoar-frost whitens the hollow backs of the cattle. For the ranchman the winter is occasionally a pleasant holiday, but more often an irksome period of enforced rest and gloomy foreboding.

Such beautiful quotes, such a wonderful place! What a beautiful experience for our boys! What a blessing for them to be able to heal in God's glorious paridise on earth! The silence of nature where they can draw closer to Our Lord,by being peaceful, by slowing down, by living in harmony with the changing seasons. Just as Jesus went to the desert to find peace and commune with the Father, so do our boys. I wish I could be there! And my son wishes he could be home!

Hello everyone-I hope everyone is having a wonderful week! I wanted to say thank you mydogsmom for the wonderful comment! I encourage parents to leave comments whenever you would like! We love to read them and I am sure other parents do too! Please feel free to share some quotes that mean something to you too!
Things have been fairly quiet here at the ranch this week. With Christmas only 5 days away (can you believe that!) the holiday season is quickly approaching. This week the boys have been helping with cattle (getting ready for calving season) and are on a mission to keep the ranch looking sharp. The shop has never looked so good! Mr. Jerry wants to let everyone know that we have Border collie puppies for sale for $250.00 each. 3 are around 6 months old and a brand new litter of 3 that will be ready for new homes after Christmas. You can call Mr. Jerry at 307-645-3380.
This is probably my last post until after the holidays. Everyone have a blessed Christmas! Take Care and Happy New Year!

This week on the ranch has been busy! The boys have been working on pulling old fence and cleaning us so they can help with building a new fence for a calving pasture. They have also been helping to build a road and putting in a bridge so the pasture is accessible. Another project that is in the near future is a new indoor riding arena/cattle barn. All this and school too! It is a very busy week! God bless!
